Thomas Hundal landed the review of the 2024 Chevy Trax (tap that link if you missed it), and it sure seems like a whole bunch of practical, affordable crossover for the money. We’ve all seen the headlines touting the average new-car price of over $48,000, and Toyota thinks that figure will soon surpass $50,000, so we’re always happy to see a nicely-appointed “regular-ass car” coming in at under half that big figure.

Thomas came away duly impressed with the Trax, and as enthusiasts who appreciate design and engineering and the challenges of manufacturing a well-equipped, well-built car to meet a low price point, we tip our hats to the team at Chevy. The new Trax represents a big leap in quality and driving experience versus the outgoing model while holding the line on price, and that’s a transformation worth applauding. The 1.2-liter three-cylinder engine makes it a no.
I thought the same thing about the turbo powered 1.whatever liter engine that they have in Equinoxes currently. I was sufficiently impressed that I currently own a ’19. It doesn’t drive at all like a sub 2L engine. It’s not just ok, it’s actually impressive. It has plenty of power, and turbo is tuned exactly where it needs to be for regular driving. All that said, the engine in the Trax might suck, but I’d give it a test drive before saying so.
Yes! The list of sub-$30K new vehicles from the Detroit three is very short, indeed. It’s great to see options even exist, much less be solid efforts. I’ve just received my “your Maverick is scheduled to be built” email from a Sept 2022 order, and was able to spec out an XLT Hybrid for under $30k.
