Here’s Us Making Adam Driver Say A Lot Of Things For Our Own Amusement: Tales From The Slack

Lewin reviewed the new Ferrari movie today and he didn’t like it. That’s fine. Not every movie is for everyone. I’m a fan of Michael Mann and, in particular, I’m a fan of over-the-top Michael Mann. I feel like Heat is one of the best crime thrillers out there, on par with Melville’s Le Samouraï and Ronin. BTW, if you haven’t seen any of those films (ahem David) please go watch them right now. I’ll wait.

Ok, now that that’s done, I’d also like to point out that Adam Driver is a fantastic actor. Not only is Driver a Marine veteran, he was also great in a bunch of movies including Frances Ha and Inside Llewyn Davis (try to picture Adam Driver going “Uh oh!” and not laugh). Obviously, everyone loved him in Girls, but let’s not sell short how he was probably the weird highlight of the mediocre Star Wars neue-trilogies.

I have not seen Ferrari yet (it’s on my list) so I can’t judge if the film is good or not, but I have a feeling that I will enjoy it because I like Mann’s over-the-top seriousness, Driver’s commitment, and Penelope Cruz is one of my favorite actresses.

All that being said, our man Peter is hilarious and made a bunch of fun riffs on Adam Driver to amuse the rest of us and I want to share those with you now.

There’s the first post wherein Peter proposes a topshot for us. You can tell me which one you liked better.

I actually didn’t grok that Peter was doing a bit, so I’m glad he kept doing it.

LOLOL.

Here’s Adam Driver as Maurizio Gucci, picked by the great Ridley Scott.

He does get cast as an Italian a lot.

It’s true. Logan Lucky is in theory a “NASCAR” movie, but it’s not really a car movie. It’s more like a typical Soderbergian heist movie set in the South. Also, watch Logan Lucky, that’s another great film.

That last joke is mine and a reference to Tony Kushner, who wrote the screenplay for Lincoln and also the great play Homebody/Kabul, so that’s literally a joke just for me.

  1. Just happened on White Noise last night, and not only is it great, it uses the awful malaise-mobiles of my youth to creep me out even more. It has car stunts AND sitting in traffic, and a Land Rover, and Driver actually does a lot of driving.

  2. I can’t really add anything to that, so I’ll just say that Adam Driver was good in a 2014 dramedy called ‘This is Where I Leave You’. He and his siblings are all [chronologically] adults but he plays the annoying younger brother of the group.

The cast includes Tina Fey, Timothy Olyphant, Jane Fonda, Jason Bateman, Rose Byrne, Connie Britton, Dax Shepard, Abigail Spencer, Corey Stoll (played Hemingway in ‘Midnight in Paris’), and Ben Schwartz (Jean-Ralphio in Parks and Recreation).

    A 1971 Jaaag XK-E and a 2009 Porsche 911 Carrera S (Cabrio) also play important roles. 🙂
