I’m guessing that if you’re reading this at all, you likely remember Hyundai’s recent concept car, the N Vision 74. We covered its design and interesting historical inspirations hear already, and based on our own lab testing of our endorphin levels and audience response, this concept car was a big hit. So, you can imagine my delight to find that Hyundai brought it to the LA Auto Show, and that their policy for who can walk closely around the car didn’t exclude deadbeats like myself. So, if you would, join me in this look at the N Vision 74!

Here, join me in admiration:

Hyundai’s press conference made a point to note that the famous DeLorean DMC-12, best known for the version with an aftermarket Flux Capacitor, has a direct line of decent to the car the N Vision 74 was inspired by, the Hyundai Pony Coupé, designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro’s ItalDesign firm. Essentially, when Hyundai decided they weren’t in the right position to go into production on a Pony-based sports car, ItalDesign held onto their sketches and dusted them off and tweaked them when the DMC-12 project came around. Here, look at their sketches for both:

Look at that! There’s differences, sure, but the familial resemblance is unmistakable.

Anyway, just watch me geeking out in the video and I think you’ll get a good sense for why this is such a fantastic concept car, especially from a company not necessarily known for dramatic concept cars.

  1. Very Cyberpunk. They ought to think of making this thing. Hyundai has been upping their game and producing something like this would really continue to bolster their image, IMHO. Obviously it will lose some things in the production version but they should stay bold and retro and just go for it. Make a car that people will really remember, even if it isn’t the best selling car in the lineup.

  2. This is as cool as concept cars come. Retro without being a throwback. A slightly toned-down all-electric production version would be incredible (if unlikely) and would be an excellent fit for the Ioniq line.

  3. I love it. I know it’s nearly impossible that it would be produced with the hydrogen fuel cell, but I do hope that it comes to market in some form, even if electric only. It could be the Hyundai halo car.

    1. It’s an electric car with batteries *and* a hydrogen fuel cell.
They are about as likely to make a production version of it as a production flying DeLorean

  4. Great looking car. Getting a strong 2nd Gen. Supra (A60) / Mitsubishi Starion vibe from the profile – both almost-perfect looking sport coupes. Remember those, fellow olds? Now, where did I leave my geritol…

    1. Theres a guy here in my town that dailys a mint black Starion. I see it a couple of times a week. I’ve never talked to him, but if I ever get a chance Im going to have to throw out an offer to buy it. Those things are great.
